Under-bed storage only works if the box actually fits UK bed frame clearances — most “universal” boxes don’t. These are sized for standard divan and slatted frames.

Short on time? Our quick picks

BELLE VOUS Underbed Storage Boxes (Pack of 2)

Foldable fabric boxes with handles and zip lids — low-profile enough for most bed frames, and they fold flat when you don’t need them.

Wheeled Low-Profile Underbed Storage Box

Castors make it easy to pull out from under a low bed one-handed.

Vacuum Storage Bags + Pump Set

Best for duvets and off-season clothes, not shoes — squeezes bulky bedding down to a fraction of its size.

Woffit Under-Bed Shoe Storage Organiser (Set of 2)

Individual compartments keep shoes paired and visible instead of piled in the hallway.

IRIS Clear Plastic Underbed Storage Box

Stackable and see-through, so you’re not guessing what’s in each box.

3-Pack Underbed Storage Boxes with Lids

Cheapest way to standardise a whole room’s under-bed storage at once.

Before you buy: measure your clearance

  • Measure floor to the lowest point of the frame (usually the slat rail, not the mattress). Subtract 1–2 cm and that’s your maximum box height.
  • Carpet eats clearance. Thick carpet can steal a centimetre or two, and wheels won’t roll well on it — fabric boxes slide better.
  • Divan bed? Most divans have no gap underneath — look at drawer divans or use vacuum bags in the wardrobe instead.

UK bed sizes and what fits underneath

A box that is too tall will not slide under, and one that is too long sticks out and trips you up. Standard UK mattress sizes are a good guide to the floor area you have to work with:

  • Single: 90 × 190 cm
  • Small double: 120 × 190 cm
  • Double: 135 × 190 cm
  • King: 150 × 200 cm
  • Super king: 180 × 200 cm

Height is the measurement that catches people out. Measure from the floor to the lowest part of the frame, not to the side rail, and look for a centre support bar or leg on doubles and kings, which splits the space in two. Many frames leave somewhere between 15 and 30 cm of clearance, but it varies a lot, and solid divan bases leave none unless they have built-in drawers. On carpet, the pile takes up a little height as well, so leave a centimetre or two spare so the box slides without catching.

What to store under the bed (and what not to)

Under the bed suits things you need a few times a year: spare bedding, out-of-season clothes, shoes you rarely wear, wrapping paper and suitcases. Choose boxes with lids or zips, because dust collects quickly at floor level. Wash and fully dry clothes and bedding before they go in, especially into vacuum bags, and do not store anything damp. Things you reach for every week are better off in a drawer or wardrobe, where you do not have to kneel down to get them.

Common questions

Fabric or plastic under-bed boxes?

Fabric boxes are lighter, quieter and fold flat when empty, so they suit clothes and bedding. Rigid plastic boxes stack, wipe clean and protect better against dust and knocks, which suits shoes and anything fragile.

Do I need a box with wheels?

On hard floors or low-pile carpet, wheels make a heavy box easy to pull out one-handed. On thick carpet small castors tend to dig in, so a box with a smooth base and a front handle is often easier.

Can I put a duvet in a vacuum bag?

Synthetic duvets and pillows cope well with being compressed. Feather and down fillings can be damaged by being squashed hard for months, so pack those loosely or check the care label first.

How do I stop under-bed storage getting dusty?

Use closed boxes rather than open baskets, and pull everything out to vacuum underneath every few weeks. Boxes on wheels or with handles make that a one-minute job.
